Making homemade biscuits from scratch doesn't have to be intimidating or time consuming. This recipe shows the cook a quick and easy way to make rolled biscuits using 5 simple ingredients. Different sizes and shapes of large cookie cutters can be used to make these biscuits. Depending on the size and shape of the cutter that is used, this recipe will make between 10 and 16 biscuits.
Ingredients for the Rolled Biscuit Recipe
- 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 8 tablespoons cold butter
- 3/4 cup milk
Directions for the Rolled Biscuit Recipe
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
- Use a large bowl to sift together the flour, baking powder and salt.
- Add 6 tablespoons of cold butter and cut it into the flour mixture, using a pastry blender or two knives, until the dough has the consistency of coarse cornmeal.
- Add the milk to the flour mixture and stir until well blended.
- Remove the dough from the bowl, and knead on a lightly floured surface a few times.
- Roll the dough out to approximately 3/4 inch thick, using a lightly floured rolling pin.
- Use a 1 1/2 to 2 inch diameter biscuit cutter, that has been dipped into flour, to cut out the biscuits.
- Continue rolling out and cutting the biscuits, until all the dough has been used.
- Place the biscuits onto a large baking sheet.
- Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter.
- Brush the top of each biscuit with a bit of the melted butter.
- Place the baking sheet into the oven and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until light golden brown.
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the biscuits cool slightly before serving.
Rolled Biscuit Recipe Variations
Before placing the biscuits in the oven, a variety of toppings can be brushed or sprinkled on the top to make an assortment of flavor variations.
- Cinnamon biscuits - brush the tops of the biscuits with milk, instead of melted butter. Sprinkle the top of each biscuit with a bit of cinnamon and sugar.
- Sesame biscuits - brush the tops of the biscuits with an egg wash, instead of melted butter, then sprinkle some sesame seeds on top. An egg wash is simply an egg that has been cracked open, added to a small bowl, then whisked until smooth.
- Poppy seed biscuits - after brushing the biscuits with melted butter, sprinkle some poppy seeds on top.
Rolled Biscuit Recipe Tips
- Use a pizza cutter, instead of a pastry blender, to cut the butter into the flour.
- Use interesting shaped cookie cutters, such as hearts or flowers, if the biscuits are to be served at a tea party or bridal show.
- Serve the biscuits with softened, butter or cream cheese.
- The cinnamon biscuits taste fantastic served with some sweet, unsalted butter that has a bit of honey mixed into it.
