Cipollini Onions

Cipollini onions, are small, flat onions, which measure 1 to 2 inches across, and 1 inch thick. Cipollini onions can be found in the produce section of most grocery stores. Cipollini onions may be available either in bulk, or in pre-packaged, eight ounce net bags. Look for cipollini onions in the grocery store near the regular onions, or where the pearl onions and shallots are kept. Pearl onions may be substituted for the cipollini onions if necessary.

Honey Glazed Onion Casserole Ingredients

  • 1 pound cipollini onions - ends cut off and peeled
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Honey Glazed Onion Casserole Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. In a small pan, heat together the honey, butter, chicken broth, sage and salt, over medium heat, until the honey is thoroughly incorporated into the sauce.
  3. Spray a 1 quart glass baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  4. Place the peeled onions into the baking dish.
  5. Pour the honey glaze over the onions.
  6. Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 1 hour.
  7. Leftover honey glazed onions can be stored in an airtight container, in the refrigerator, for up to one week.

Recipe Tips and Suggestions

  1. If the cipollini onions are proving difficult to peel, soak them in hot water for up to 5 minutes.
  2. Maple syrup can be substituted for the honey, if desired.
  3. Experiment with other herbs in this recipe, such as rosemary, lavender or thyme.
  4. A bit of freshly ground nutmeg can be sprinkled on top of the onions before baking them in the oven.
  5. A vegetarian version of baked, honey glazed onions can be created by substituting margarine for the butter, and vegetable broth for the chicken broth.
  6. One tablespoon of fresh sage can be substituted for the 1 teaspoon of dried sage.
  7. Honey glazed onions may also be served on top of pasta, rice or baked potatoes.
