Various onions can be used when creating this loaf of bread. White onion, red onion or sweet valaida onions can all be used. The pictures that accompany this article, show a loaf of onion herb bread that was made using red onions. The addition of fresh herbs and poppy seeds add additional levels of flavor to this loaf of homemade bread. Leftover bread can be toasted, and served along with breakfast, or used to make all kinds of sandwiches.
Onion Herb Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried yeast
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 ½ cups sliced onions
- 4 cups white flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon fresh oregano - minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley - minced
- Non-stick cooking spray
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 2 teaspoons poppy seeds
- Extra flour for kneading
Directions for the Onion Herb Bread
- Add ¾ cup of the warm water to a small bowl.
- Add the granulated sugar and stir until thoroughly dissolved.
- Sprinkle the yeast on top of the water and set aside until the yeast has begun to turn frothy. This step will take approximately 10 minutes.
- Add the vegetable oil to a medium size frying pan and add the onions. Cook the onions over medium heat until they are translucent, and golden brown. Remove the pan from the heat.
- In a large bowl, sift together the flour and salt.
- Stir in the black pepper, oregano and parsley.
- Add the onions, yeast mixture and the remaining ¾ cup of warm water to the flour.
- Stir together until a dough is formed.
- If the dough is dry, add a bit more water.
- Form the dough into a ball and knead on a floured work surface for 3-5 minutes.
- Add additional flour to the ball of dough, if necessary, to prevent it from sticking to the work surface.
- Coat the bottom of a clean bowl with non-stick cooking spray.
- Place the dough into the bowl.
- Cover the top of the bowl with a clean kitchen towel.
- Let the dough rise, in a warm location, such as on top of a refrigerator, until doubled in size. This step can take between 1 and 2 hours.
- Return the dough to the floured work surface and knead for 1-2 minutes.
- Shape the dough into a 8-10 inch flat circle and place it on a baking sheet which has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.
- Use a serrated knife to cut diagonal lines across the top of the dough.
- Set the pan of dough aside and let it rise for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
- While the oven is preheating, coat the top of the dough with the milk and sprinkle the poppy seeds on top.
- Place the pan in the oven and cook for 10 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to 400 degrees and bake for 20 more minutes.
- Remove the bread from the oven and let cool slightly before slicing.
