The lime juice used in this recipe is reactive with metal. Instead of using a metal mixing bowl, use either a glass or plastic mixing bowl and a wooden or plastic mixing spoon when creating the guacamole dip. Recipe Tips and Suggestions
- Be careful when working with avocados. They start to turn brown shortly after being cut open. The lime juice helps prevent the avocados from browning. Lemon juice can be substituted for the lime juice if desired, for a slightly different flavor.
- This guacamole dip should be used immediately, but it will keep in the refrigerator for a day or two. Any longer and the avocados will start to turn brown, even with the addition of the lime juice.
- Serve this dip with plenty of corn chips. Interesting varieties of corn chips, such as those made out of blue corn, can be found at most grocery stores. Tostito's makes a whole grain chip flavored with a hint of lime, which makes a great accompaniment to the avocado spread.
- Guacamole also makes a terrific side dish to serve along with fajitas, tacos and other Tex-Mex style food.
- The recipe calls for 2 cloves of garlic, more or less garlic may be added according to personal taste.
- A few dashes of hot pepper sauce may be added, if desired, to create a spicy version of the guacamole spread.
