Learn how-to make an appetizer featuring a wheel of cheese, stuffed with fig jam and pecans, enrobed in a puffed pastry shell.

Baked brie is a wonderful appetizer to feature at holiday celebrations, dinner parties and other special occasions. Serve baked brie with a variety of crackers and sliced French or Italian bread. Baked brie with jam and nuts can also be offered with a variety of fruits such as grapes, apples or melon.

Baked Brie Appetizer Ingredients

  • 1/2 package puff pastry
  • 1 7-8 ounce wheel of brie cheese
  • 1/4 cup fig jam
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Baked Brie Appetizer Directions

  1. Remove the puff pastry from the freezer, and let thaw at room temperature for approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
  2. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Lightly flour a large work surface, or cutting board, with flour.
  4. Place the puff pastry on the work surface.
  5. Lightly sprinkle the top of the puff pastry, and a rolling pin, with flour.
  6. Roll the puff pastry out to an approximately 1/8 inch thickness.
  7. Cut the wheel of brie cheese in half.
  8. Place one half of the cheese in the center of the puff pastry.
  9. Evenly spread the fig jam and chopped nuts on top of the cheese.
  10. Cover with the second half of the wheel of brie.
  11. Lightly whisk the egg in a small bowl.
  12. Spread the edges of the puff pastry with a bit of the egg wash.
  13. Bring the sides of the puff pastry up and over the wheel of cheese.
  14. Cut off any excess puff pastry and make sure all seams are well sealed.
  15. Place the puff pastry covered brie, seam side down, on a baking pan that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.
  16. Brush the remaining egg wash all over the puff pastry.
  17. Sprinkle the nutmeg on top of the puff pastry.
  18. Place the baking pan in the oven, and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until light golden brown.

Baked Brie Recipe Suggestions

1. Camembert cheese can be used in place of the brie cheese.

2. Any type of nuts, such as walnuts, pistachios or almonds, can be used in place of the pecans.

3. Spices, such as cinnamon, ginger or cardamon, can be substituted for the nutmeg.

4. A variety of jams and preserves can be used to make baked brie. A few suggestions include; apricot preserves, grape jelly, spiced ginger preserves and raspberry jam.

5. Instead of sprinkling nutmeg on top of the baked brie, try adding sesame seeds or poppy seeds on top of the puff pastry before baking it in the oven.
